Commander of IRGC Navy Threatens to Block Strait of Hormuz
Alireza Tangsiri, the commander of the IRGC navy, warned that if the United States tries to restrict the Strait of Hormuz for Iran, his forces will block this strategic location.
On Monday, April 22, Tangsiri said: “According to international law, the Strait of Hormuz is a water passage and if we are restricted in using it, we will block it.”
His warning is being issued as the Trump administration is planning not to extend the sanction exemption waivers for the countries that buy Iranian oil.
Also, two weeks ago, the United States designated IRGC as a terrorist organization. After that decision, many have warned about the confrontation between the forces of IRGC and the United States.
IRGC oversees the safety of Iranian waters in the Persian Gulf instead of the army.
Strait of Hormuz is a very important international passage with a high percentage of the world’s oil going through it each day.
According to Tangsiri: “In case of any threats, we will not hesitate to protect and defend Iranian waters and defend our honor.”
He did not elaborate on how they intend to block the Strait of Hormuz. The Islamic Republic officials have repeatedly, implicitly and explicitly, threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz.
