Iranian Army Replaces IRGC at Afghanistan Border
Mohammad Bagheri, the chief of the general staff of the armed forces, announced that the army ground forces are now in charge of providing safety on Iran-Afghanistan border.
According to Mehr News, Bagheri stated that in recent months the responsibility of border security on Afghanistan border has been given to the army ground forces; a decision which will “definitely lead to safer borders.” He also promised new fortifications and plans.
Border security is a responsibility of the police force, but in recent years, most of the eastern border security was transferred to the IRGC in 2015. It was going to be for a 5- year period.
The eastern borders of Iran (with Afghanistan and Pakistan) face many security problems, such as anti-Islamic Republic armed militias, drug trade, terrorist attacks, and kidnapping.
