Nasrin Sotoudeh Sentenced to 38 Years in Prison and 148 Lashes
In an interview with Iran International, Reza Khandan, the husband of Nasrin Sotoudeh confirmed that the human rights advocate and attorney, has been sentenced to 38 years in prison.
On his Facebook page, Khandan wrote: “The sentence is for two open cases. 5 years for the first case and 33 years and 148 lashes for the second.”
On Monday, Judge Moghiseh had announced that Sotoudeh has been sentenced to 5 years in prison for “assembly and conspiracy against the regime” and 2 years for “insulting the leader”.
Reza Khandan had told the Iran Human Rights Campaign that there has only been one trial session for his wife presided by Judge Moghiseh, where Sotoudeh and her attorney were absent.
In protest to the new rule that the defendants have to choose their attorney from the list of attorneys approved by the judiciary, Sotoudeh did not choose an attorney for herself.
Many international human rights organizations have protested the imprisonment of Nasrin Sotoudeh and have asked the Islamic Republic for her release.
