Mahmoud Mousavi Majd, who was accused of spying on the IRGC’s Quds Force by the security organizations and Iran’s judiciary, was executed on Monday morning.

Hours before the news was announced, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) aired parts of Mousavi Majd’s confession in which he claimed his motive for spying on the Quds Force in Syria was money.

The spokesperson for the judiciary had previously announced that Majd had gathered information about the movements of Qasem Soleimani, the former head of Quds Force. The judiciary’s media center denied this comment and announced that Mousavi Majd was arrested sixteen months before the death of Qasem Soleimani and his charges have no connection to the assassination of the former head of Quds Force.

However, the judiciary’s Mizan News Agency, recently once again announced that one of his charges was reporting Soleimani and other commanders’ movements and places of stay to Mossad and CIA during a long period of time.

Mousavi Majd was kidnapped in Syria and returned to Iran in 2018. Tasnim News Agency had reported that Hezbollah of Lebanon was responsible for the kidnapping.

In a letter to the Islamic Republic senior officials, the father of Mousavi Majd stated that the reason for his son’s arrest and espionage charges was the report that he drafted for IRGC Intelligence about “a corrupt group in Syria” in which he mentions “moral and financial and drug-related corruption of some of the children of senior Islamic Republic officials”.

Mousavi Majd was sentenced to death by judge Abolqasem Salavati in 2019. The Supreme Court confirmed his death sentence in March of 2020.
