Official Iranian, Iraqi, Syrian sources: Baghdadi likely killed
Official sources in Iran, Iraq, and Syria announced on Sunday that Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS has most likely been killed on Saturday night in a US operation in Syria.
The news has been circulating while President Trump announced on his Twitter account that “something very big” has happened, and he is to address the nation on Sunday morning.
One American official has claimed that Baghdadi was targeted by American forces, but it is still early to talk about the success of the operation.
There are currently several different accounts of the events, varying from Baghdadi and his bodyguard were killed while trying to move his family near the Turkish border, to an attack on his compound in a village near the border in which he committed suicide by an explosive vest.
Newsweek, the first publication that broke the news of Baghdadi’s death said an American military official has confirmed Baghdadi’s death.
Pentagon has not reacted to Baghdadi’s death yet, but the spokesperson for the White House announced that President Trump will read an important statement at 9:00 am.
In recent days, President Trump’s decision to move forces out of Syria which led to Turkey’s attack on Syrian Kurds was heavily criticized by both sides of the aisle.
Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi has been the leader of ISIS since its formation in 2010.
