Plans for an Economic Referendum in Iran's Parliament

Tasnim News Agency has reported that some members of parliament have developed a bill for a referendum.

The suggested referendum’s four aspects consist of FATF (anti-money laundering) bills, a one-liter ration of gas for every Iranian a day, 200000 tomans of money as subsidies for every Iranian each month (almost 15 dollars), and an income limit of 7 million tomans per month for the management positions in the government.

According to the plan, the fuel subsidies will be removed, but every Iranian will receive one liter of gas a day, and they can choose to sell or use it.

The referendum plan has been developed by members who oppose the government.

Removing the subsidy from the fuel and goods bought with a subsidized dollar can cause massive inflations, but the supporters of the bill believe people can solve their financial problems with the monthly financial subsidy and selling their fuel ration.

The issue of limiting the income of the officials have been the topic of discussion for the past few months, ever since the astronomical incomes of some of the officials were publicized.

Request for a referendum must be approved by two-thirds of the members of the parliament, meaning 194 members.

The idea of a referendum has also been brought up by some of the supporters of the government, who have criticized the process of decision making by the Expediency Discernment Assembly on the FATF bills.
