Appeal court confirms the prison sentences of Atena Daemi and Golrokh Iraee

Without holding a session, the appeal court of Tehran confirmed the sentences of Atena Deami and Golrokh Iraee to three years and seven months in prison for “insulting the leader” and “propaganda against the regime.”

Iraee’s defense attorney, Amir Raisian, told Ensaf News: “Golrokh Iraee’s sentence to two years and one month in prison for insulting the leader and one year and six months for propaganda against the regime was confirmed verbatim by the Revolutionary Court of Tehran.”

He added: “I’m not Ms. Daemi’s attorney, but her sentence was also confirmed verbatim.”

Golrokh Iraee, former political prisoner and Atena Daemi, currently incarcerated, were charged with propaganda against the regime through “writing letters and statements from prison, connection with foreign media, and insulting the supreme leader through chanting an anthem in the prison’s visitation room after the execution of Zanyar Moradi, Loghman Moradi, and Ramin Hossein Panahi.”

Daemi and Iraee have not accepted the charges and sai their chants were not insulting to anyone, but Judge Iman Afsharian, the chief justice of the branch 26 of Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced them each to “two years and one month in prison for insulting the leader and one year and six months for propaganda against the regime.”

The sentences were approved by the appeal court without holding a session.

Atena Daemi was supposed to be released in about a year, but with the new sentence, she will stay in prison. Golrokh Iraee, whose husband Arash Sadeghi is still in prison, will have to return to prison again.

Iraee was last arrested after the incarceration of her husband. The agents found an unpublished book that she had written about stoning, and she was sentenced to five years in prison for “blasphemy” because of that book.
