Demography Scholar Arrested for “Infiltration”
Meimanat Hosseini Chavoshi, Demography and Population scholar at the National University of Australia, was arrested in Iran.
Mahmoud Behzadi, an attorney, told IRNA that she was arrested on Sunday for the charge of “infiltration”.
He also reported that Chavoshi has refused to choose any of the 20 attorneys that the judiciary has appointed her.
Chavoshi is a researcher at the “Public Policy Institute" of the National University of Australia. Her book titled “The Fertility Transition in Iran” received the International book of the year award from the Islamic Republic.
Last week, Fars News and Kayhan newspaper (regime’s propaganda arms) reported the arrest of “a group of infiltrators in the field of demography”.
In recent years, Ayatollah Khamenei, the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, has expressed his concern about the aging Iranian population and his discontent with the policy of population control. Two years ago, he issued an order demanding the government to promote more children, marriage, and women staying at home. He had previously said that Iran’s population must be at least around 150 million.
It is believed among his supporters that the idea of population control is the enemy’s plan to weaken the Islamic Republic.
