Earthquake in Khuzestan province leaves least one dead and 64 injured

An earthquake with the magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale shook the southern province of Khuzestan on Monday, July 8. The media have reported so far one death due to “panic and heart attack” and 64 injured.

The center of this earthquake, which occurred at 11:30 am local time, was between the cities of Masjed Soleyman and Izeh, in the depth of 17 km. But the earthquake was felt in most of the cities in the province including Ahvaz.

According to the president of Red Crescent organization, the earthquake was also felt in other neighboring provinces and even as far as Isfahan province and the country of Kuwait.

There are still no assessments of all the damages and casualties but the governor of Masjed Soleyman reported “heavy damages to city buildings due to the earthquake.”

State TV reported that “in Masjed Soleyman due to the destruction of some buildings, some parts of the electricity network has been damaged.”

Within the 15 km radius of the earthquake 56 villages have been impacted.

A few months ago, massive floods caused heavy damages in Khuzestan province.
