Esmaeili: If We Allow Women in Stadiums, FIFA Will Ask for More

Gholamhossein Emsaeili, the Attorney General of Tehran, claimed that the issue of women in stadiums is “secondary issue” and said: “Today the issue of women in stadiums is not a problem for the people and it’s not something that the president should distract himself with it.”

He continued: “If today we give a section of the stadium to women so that our Football Federation is not suspended, tomorrow they will say women and men should stand next to each other while watching the game; and later they will say women should be allowed in stadiums without hijabs.”

According to FIFA rules, countries cannot forbid women from watching the games in stadiums. Therefore, in order to avoid getting punished by FIFA, the Iranian Football Federation invited a small number of women to the stadium in a specific sectionو who were all related to football players or authorities. Women who went to the stadium to buy tickets were turned away by the police.
