Iran Holds the Record for Highest Rise of Protest in 2018
According to ACLED NGO, in 2018, Iran has witnessed the highest rise in protest movements in the world.
ACLED reports that the protests in Iran have increased 284 percent, meaning almost 4 times as before.
The report shows that in Iran, 2251 protest activities have taken place in 2018, which puts Iran in the third place in the world after China and Pakistan.
The ACLED institute has also emphasized the role of labor activist groups in Iran’s protests last year.
According to the data, during the past year, the violence and political unrest have gone through a quick and sudden shift. The number and types of violence, the organized protests, number of casualties, the number of armed protesters and the geographical spread of the violence, they all have changed significantly.
Based on the report, while the number of violent cases and organized political unrest has decreased around the world (due to the Syrian civil war coming to an end), the number of uprisings and protests in the south and southeast Asia has increased 33%. The report also indicates that the number of locations that witnessed uprisings has also increased 24 percent. This spread of protests has been more significant in the middle east, where it has doubled.
According to the ACLED report, India has the highest number of protests, almost three times more than Pakistan which stands at the second place. And Iran stands in third with the highest increase in unrest in 2018.
