Iran unveils new missile defense system “Bavar-373”
The president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hassan Rouhani, unveiled the new “Iranian-made” missile defense system “Bavar-373” which is said to be similar to S-300 and have “long-range and altitude”.
Iranian media has called it “one of the most advanced and unique defense systems of the country”.
While visiting the missile defense system on Thursday, August 22, President Rouhani said: “Due to the cruel sanctions by the foreigners and inability to acquire long-range defense systems, the Islamic Republic decided to prioritize the development of this technology and defense system inside the country.”
During the unveiling ceremony, the Defense Minister Amir Hatami boasted about “Iran’s defensive power” and said: “The Islamic Republic’s preventive power is now guaranteed for a long time.”
“Lack of commitment from Russians to sell the S-300 missile defense system was the motivation behind building this system ourselves,” said Amir Hatami.
In 2009 the Islamic Republic revealed a model of this Defense system for the first time. It was reported in 2011 that the Bavar-373 was being developed, and in 2016, during a military technology exhibition, for the first time, some parts of the system were unveiled.
The Islamic Republic claims that this missile defense system is completely “Iranian-built” and costs much less than its similar foreign models.
