Iranian frigate Sahand deployed to escort ships in Gulf of Aden
The Coordinating Deputy of the Islamic Republic Army, Habobollah Sayyari, announced the deployment of Sahand frigate to the Gulf of Aden for a “long-term mission”.
According to state-owned IRNA, Sayyari explained that the purpose of Sahand’s deployment is to provide security for the Islamic Republic of Iran’s navigation in international waters, and the frigate’s mission is to escort ships in Oman Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
IRNA adds that Sahand frigate joined the Islamic Republic navy in December 2018 as “the most advanced frigate in Western Asia” and this is its first long-distance mission.
The ship is armed with anti-ship, air, ground missiles with accurate missile defense system and anti-submarine defense system.
The frigate is being deployed to the Gulf of Aden at a time when the international community has expressed concerns about Iran threatening maritime security in the region.
After the United States’ exit from the nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), President Rouhani and other Iranian officials repeatedly threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz if Iran’s oil export drops to zero.
