Khamenei: I Expected Mousavi to Back Down Immediately
A video has been published that is claimed to contain Ayatollah Khamenei’s never-before-published words in his office right after the 2009 election and during the protests.
The video shows the supreme leader in his office talking to a group of people who have all been blurred.
While referring to Mousavi’s claim of election fraud one day after the election, Khamenei says he sent someone to visit Mousavi and reprimand him. He mentions that he expected Mousavi to “back down immediately”.
According to Khamenei, Mousavi responds by saying that the election needs to be nulled and mentions that he had a meeting with four people, including Mohammad Khatami and Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, in which they all agreed that the election should be nulled. Khamenei adds that Khatami and Rafsanjani denied this claim.
The full version of the video has not been released yet. The current version was published in the anniversary of Ashura protests in 2009.
In the 2009 protests to the election results, hundreds of thousands of Iranians came to the streets in peaceful protest. The supreme leader rejected any possibility of nullifying the election and said the protesters, “knowingly or unknowingly, are responsible for any bloodshed and violence that ensues.” His ultimatum led to the violent suppression of the protests.
