Leuven University Professor Arrested in Iran
The dean of Tehran University reported the arrest of a professor of the Leuven University of Belgium.
According to ISNA, Ahmad Abadi said that the professor is “Iranian-Belgian”, but IRNA identified him as the “Iranian associate professor at the Belgian university”.
Ahmad Abadi did not name the professor but said the individual has taught in Leuven University and was arrested in 2017.
According to the dean of Tehran University, “in the recent trip, Belgian universities objected to the arrest and it is a very important issue for their academic community.”
He is referring to the recent trip by the minister of higher education to Belgium, in which Ahmad Abadi also accompanied him.
The arrest of academic figures is a common theme in Iran. In recent years, Ahmad Reza Jalali, Iranian-Swedish professor, and Maymanat Hosseini Chavoshi, a researcher at Australian National University have been arrested among others.
Mr. Jalali has been sentenced to death, but Chavoshi was released after two months.
