Locust Crisis in Seven Southern Provinces of Iran

One member of parliament from a southern province of Iran reported that seven provinces are struggling with the locusts and said that most of the pesticide is delivered through hand spray and there has been no crop dusting as of yet.

The representative of Rafsanjan, Ahmad Anaraki, told ILNA that: “The presence of locusts is at such levels that they completely destroy farms and gardens, and even if there are no farms in the area, they attack telephone poles and wooden houses.”

He added that the locusts’ presence is so widespread that they might even attack valleys and mountains.

The presence of locusts in the provinces of Fars, Sistan & Baluchistan, Khuzestan, Hormozgan, and Kerman has reached a crisis level, and according to this MP, it will continue until June.

Anaraki continued: “The more important issue is the locusts laying eggs. If they lay eggs in Iran, Iran will become their main habitat next year instead of Saudi Arabia.”

In Hormozgan province, the chairman of plant protection organization reported a new wave of attack by “sea locusts” with heavy density in the days after the rain and said that currently, they have crossed half of the province and 100 km inland.

Fars, Sistan & Baluchistan, and Khuzestan have also raised the alarm.

According to the chairman of Iran’s plant protection organization, since February 40 to 50 heavy density swarms of locusts from the Arabian Peninsula have entered the country.

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has changed Iran’s condition from yellow to orange.
