Markets Go on Strike in Several Cities

Reports and videos from Iran on social media indicate that markets in several cities in Iran including Sanandaj, Tehran, Mashhad, and Isfahan, Tabriz, Kerman, Rafsanjan, and Kermanshah have gone on strike.

Mukrian News has confirmed that Markets in Sanandaj and Saqqez have closed their stores and gone on strike. Iran International is not yet able to confirm these videos and images independently. The strikes occurred after a call to strike in the last few days on social media.

Earlier in July, markets in several cities also went on strike. Those strikes were met with police intervention.

Islamic Republic TV has announced that Tehran’s Great Market “is working as usual.”

A few weeks ago, in some of Iran’s Kurdish majority areas, markets also went on strike in protest to the execution of several Iranian Kurdish activists, and the attack on the headquarters of the Democratic Party of Iran’s Kurdistan by the IRGC.

The market strikes come at a time when many truck drivers in most provinces of the country are also on strike. The judicial authorities had previously threatened the strikes with “most severe responses and punishments.”
