Members of Parliament Now Limited to Three Terms
The Islamic Consultative Majlis (Parliament) passed a bill that limits members of parliament to three terms, which is 12 years.
If the bill is passed by the Guardian Council, 34 current MPs will not be able to run for another term. Ali Larijani, the spokesperson of the Majlis and Ali Motahari, his deputy, are the most famous among these MPs.
Other prominent MPs include Mohammadreza Tabesh, Boroujerdi, Karimi Ghoddousi, Mohammad Reza Bahonar, and Ahmad Nategh Nouri.
Bahonar and Nategh Nouri hold the record with 7 terms each.
The absence of these prominent figures, especially Larijani, could change the political landscape of the parliament. Some media and analysts have predicted that Larijani will be running for president in 2 years.
However, Mohammad Dehghani, member of the judicial committee who also will not be able to run for the next term says this bill is against the constitution and passing it will mean to change the constitution and therefore the Guardian Council will not pass this bill.
