Tehran Discontent with Georgia’s Decision to Deport Iranian Citizens
Bahram Ghasemi, the spokesperson for the Islamic Republic’s ministry of foreign affairs responded to the reports of Iranian citizens being denied entrance to Georgia and said that Iranian embassy in Georgia has been ordered to investigate the issue.
According to ISNA, in his Monday morning press conference, Ghasemi said that some of the deported Iranians had all the required documents and the reason for their deportation is unknown. He continued: “We have expressed our discontent and are currently investigating to find out the reason behind this decision. We have started talks with Georgia to identify the reason.”
He also said that some of the people deported did not have the necessary documents to enter Georgia and some that had documents, “were carrying drugs which are being investigated.”
Previously, the Iranian embassy in Georgia had announced that they have repeatedly received “news about the deportation of Iranian citizens” and that they “have taken necessary actions through diplomatic channels.”
Iranians can stay up to 45 days in Georgia without a visa, and in recent years many Iranian citizens have resided and invested in this country.
Regarding the issue of sanctions, Ghasemi said that he was optimistic about the EU trade mechanism for Iran.
In response to Pompeo’s accusations about Iran’s missile tests, he claimed that he is not aware whether or not the Islamic Republic has tested rockets in recent days.
