The trial of Total petroleum company begun today on Thursday, October 11. The French giant is accused of paying bribes in order to sign contracts with Iran.
Total signed two gas and petroleum contracts with Iran in the 1990s. After 2000 the company was accused of “paying 30 to 40 million dollars in bribes in relation to these two contracts”. The main contract, signed in 1997, was regarding the expansion of the Southern Pars gas field. The value of the contract was $2 billion.
At the time, the United States had warned Total and other companies not to make deals with Iran.
