Tensions Rise Between China and Canada Over Iran Sanctions

China Arrests Former Canadian Diplomat

Michael Kovrig, former Canadian Diplomat who is currently working with International Crisis Group, has been arrested in China.

Regarding the news of Kovrig’s arrest, the International Crisis Group told Reuters that the group is trying to release him as soon as possible.

His arrest is considered to be a response to Canada arresting Huawei’s chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou by the request of the United States.

Meng Wanzhou is a board member of the Huawei and daughter of the founder of this Chinese tech giant. She was arrested for violating U.S sanctions against Iran.

China has demanded the immediate release of Meng.

The Foreign Ministries of Canada and China have not yet reacted to the arrest of Kovrig.

Kovrig was a diplomat in China and Hong Kong from 2003 to 2016.
