Iran and Saudi Arabia: We Do Not Seek a War
Hossein Salami, the commander in chief of the IRGC stated that Iran is “not seeking war” but not afraid of war either. He was referring to the rising tensions between Tehran and Washington in recent weeks.
On Sunday, May 19, while referring to these tensions, he said that “the enemy is afraid of war” and “defeating an enemy with such nature is easy”.
King Salman of Saudi Arabia has called for a summit in Mecca between countries of the region in order to discuss and review the recent attacks on the four oil tankers near Fujairah.
The foreign ministry of UAE has also issued a statement calling for “unity among the countries of the region in the face of “crisis conditions”.
However, Adel Al-Jubeir, the Saudi minister of state for foreign affairs said that his country does not support a war in the region but is prepared to respond to the recent attacks with strength.
In a press conference on Sunday, he stated that “Saudi Arabia doesn’t want a war”, and that “the ball is now in Iran’s court”.
Saudi Arabia has accused Iran of ordering the attacks by Houthis of Yemen on Saudi Arabia’s two oil distribution terminals.
The attack on the Saudi oil facilities was executed shortly after the attacks on four oil tankers in Fujairah port.
Jubeir went on to say that Saudi Arabia will make efforts to prevent a war, “but also emphasizes that if the other side chooses war, the kingdom will respond with strength and conviction and defend its country and interests.”
