Saudi Arabia invites Emir of Qatar to emergency summit before
The king of Saudi Arabia officially invited the Emir of Qatar to the emergency Gulf Cooperation Council summit in Mecca. The king sent the invitation right before Abbas Araghchi, the deputy foreign minister of Iran visits Qatar.
King Salman of Saudi Arabia previously had decided not to invite the Emir of Qatar to this summit.
The invitation has been confirmed by the foreign ministry of Qatar.
The topic of the discussion for the emergency summit is the sabotage of four commercial vessels near Fujairah port in Emirates, and the Houthis’ attack on Saudi Arabian oil facilities.
Riyadh has accused Tehran of ordering the drone attacks on its facilities. Houthis of Yemen who are supported by Iran have claimed responsibility for the attacks.
In 2017, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, and Bahrain accused Qatar of supporting terrorism and ties with Iran, and imposed economic and political sanctions against Doha.
Two days ago, Iran’s ministry of foreign affairs announced that Araghchi will be visiting Oman, Kuwait, and Qatar in the upcoming weeks. King Salman’s change of mind and the invitation for the Emir of Qatar happened at the same time as Araghchi’s visit to Oman. Foreign minister Javad Zarif is also currently visiting Iraq.
