United States Asks for More Restrictions on Iran’s Missile Program
Jonathan Cohen, the serving United States ambassador to the United Nations, asked the security council to put more restrictions on Iran’s current missile program.
According to Reuters, on Thursday, March 7, Cohen said that the current missile tests by Iran are in violation of the 2231 resolution of the security council in 2015.
The 2231 security council resolution in 2015 asked Iran’s government to stop testing ballistic missiles that can carry nuclear warheads for 8 years.
Iran’s government first denied the allegation of testing ballistic missiles but later claimed that the language of the resolution 2231 is in a way that does not make it a legal commitment for Iran.
So far, the United States government has unilaterally taken steps against Iran’s ballistic missile program and in its last effort, it added five more companies to the list of sanctions in relation to the missile program.
The European countries have also asked Iran repeatedly to put aside its missile program and expressed their deep concerns about Iran’s decision to continue this program. They stated that Iran not only has increased the range and the precision of its missiles, but it has increased their number.
Three days after their statement, IRGC unveiled its new Dezful ballistic missile in an underground location.
