U.S Will Designate Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a Terrorist Group
The United States is set to put the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on its list of terrorist groups. So far, no Iranian military official has reacted to the news.
The chairman of the national security committee of Majlis (parliament) said that if the United States puts IRGC on its terror list, Iran will put American military forces on its terror list next to ISIS.
On Friday, April 5, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Trump administration is ready to put IRGC’s name on the list of terrorist groups.
According to Reuters, the State Department will announce the news this week. Previously, Bahram Ghassemi, the spokesperson for Iran’s ministry of foreign affairs had said that Iran’s response to putting IRGC on the terror list will be severe. Mohammad Ali Jafari, the commander of IRGC had also said that in the face of this action, Iran will treat the American army like the ISIS forces.
The United States had previously put the Qods Force, which is the international arm of the IRGC, on the terrorist list.
Ayatollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Revolution founded IRGC in 1980 as a parallel military body to the army as he was purging the high-ranking officers in the army.
The current commander of IRGC forces is Mohammad Ali Jafari. The commander of the Qods force is Qasem Soleimani.
