U.S. will end sanctions waiver for Iran's Fordo nuclear site: Pompeo

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Monday that the United States will terminate its sanctions waiver with regards to Iran’s Fordo nuclear plant by December 15. He added that the US is closely monitoring protests in Iran and is deeply concerned about the reports of fatalities.

“The right amount of uranium enrichment for the world’s largest state sponsor of terror is zero ... There is no legitimate reason for Iran to resume enrichment at this previously clandestine site,” Pompeo said at a press briefing.

Pompeo continued: “We condemn strongly any acts of violence committed by this regime against the Iranian people and are deeply concerned by reports of several fatalities.” He added: “The Islamic Republic must cease violence against its own people and should immediately restore the ability of all Iranians to access a free and open Internet. The world’s watching.”

Since Friday last week, protests have erupted across Iran in response to the tripled price of gasoline. Hundreds of banks and government buildings and police cars have been torched and dozens killed.

The leader of the Islamic Republic and his Revolutionary Guard have warned the protesters to end their protests or face a strong response from the regime.
