Zarif in Qatar: We Will Not Surrender to U.S Pressure
While referring to his government’s good relations with Qatar, Kuwait, and Oman, the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said he hopes Iran “would have the same relationship with Saudi Arabia, Emirates, and Bahrain.”
In a press conference in Doha, the capital of Qatar, Zarif told the reporters: “We do not interfere with the relationships of the other middle eastern countries and the United States. The important thing for us in the region is to have an understanding that we have to live alongside each other and that requires conversation and mutual understanding and respect.”
Regarding Saudi Arabia cutting ties with Qatar, Zarif stated: “We are against these pressures against Qatar, and we consider them to be against international laws. Today, the only path for all sides is to get back to the negotiation table.”
Saudi Arabia cut ties with Iran years ago after two of its diplomatic offices were set on fire in Tehran and Mashhad. Houthis in Yemen, backed by Iran, have shot many missiles into Saudi Arabia, which have been identified as Iranian missiles. Bahrain recently arrested over 130 IRGC affiliates in Bahrain trying to plan terror attacks and create an organization like Hezbollah. Bahrain, Emirates, and Saudi Arabia have also cut ties with Qatar due to its “support of terrorism."
Regarding U.S sanctions against Iran, Zarif said: “We do not accept these pressures against our people, but we will not bow down and we will welcome those who extend a hand of friendship.”
Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and United Arab Emirates have repeatedly accused Iran of interfering in their domestic affairs and “supporting Shia opposition groups.”
