Iran Confirms Secret Talks with Taliban
The chairman of national security high council Ali Shamkhani confirmed that Iran is negotiating with the Taliban and that the negotiations are done with the knowledge of Afghanistan’s government.
According to the reports, Shamkhani and Gholamreza Mehrabi, the deputy commander of joint armed forces, and Esmaeil Ghaani, deputy commander of IRGC Qods force have traveled to Kabul unannounced. Shamkhani has met with Afghanistan’s authorities including Hamdollah Moheb of the security council.
He explained the talks with the Taliban as an attempt to “solve the security problems in Afghanistan”.
There were direct talks between representatives of the Taliban and the United States, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Emirates last week. Afghanistan had also sent its representatives, but the Taliban announced that they would not meet with them.
The United States has regularly accused the Islamic Republic of working with the Taliban, but the Islamic Republic officials deny the allegations.
