Women Lashed by Taliban for Listening to Music
As the peace negotiations with Taliban rebels continue, a video surfaced in Afghanistan social media which shows several men and two women lashed by the Taliban in a remote area in Eastern Afghanistan.
In the video, two women wearing burqas are being lashed in public by Taliban warriors.
The video, which seems to be propaganda made and distributed by Taliban, shows the verdicts of several men and women being read, which says these people are being “punished” for the “crime” of performing and listening to music.
During the five-year rule of the Taliban in Afghanistan, listening to music, the presence of women in public places, and the education of girls were forbidden. After the fall of the Taliban in 2001, the international community provided plans and programs to encourage women’s participation in the society and government position and the education of girls.
Now the civil society of Afghanistan, especially women’s rights groups are worried that in the peace negotiations between the US officials and Taliban, their rights would be ignored, and women’s conditions would regress to the time of Taliban’s rule.
Women and the youth have tried to draw the attention of the international community to this issue through several campaigns.
The last round of negotiations between Taliban and US officials were held in Doha earlier in March. Uzbekistan announced on Sunday that it can host the direct talks between Afghanistan government and Taliban. The government of Afghanistan has welcomed Uzbekistan’s proposal.
Previously, Iranian officials had also reported that they have had talks with the Taliban, which was condemned by the government of Afghanistan.
