Earthquake in East Azerbaijan leaves 6 dead and hundreds injured
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 in East Azerbaijan province left at least six dead and over 540 injured. According to Iran’s Red Crescent report, 17 villages were damaged by the earthquake and seven villages were damaged from 30 to 100 percent.
The chairman of Iran’s emergency services announced that the number of injured has increased to 584, out of which 36 were hospitalized and the rest received basic medical attention and were released quickly.
According to the chair of the East Azerbaijan crisis management office, most damages of occurred in villages, and in the cities the damages were limited to cracked walls and broken glass. He also announced that 455 tents have been distributed among the people whose houses were damaged.
According to IRNA, another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 occurred earlier this morning in East Azerbaijan.
The initial earthquake occurred at 2.17 am on Friday and it was felt in many areas in the northwest of the country.
The earthquake was felt in West Azerbaijan, Gilan, Zanjan, and Ardabil provinces.
