Environmental Activists Tried Without the Presence of Their Attorneys

The trial of eight environmental activists was held today, on January 30. The trial was presided by Judge Abolghasem Salavati.

Some media in Iran reported that the defendants had their hired attorneys present in court. But Hossein Aqasi, the defense attorney of Sam Rajabi, one of the arrested environmental activists, denied this claim and said the trial was held without his presence. He said the branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court barred him from the court, even though he was not fired by his client, and the trial was held with appointed attorneys approved by the judiciary.

According to Aqasi, the families of the defendants were not informed of the trial date before the trial.

The environmental activists were arrested last year by the IRGC intelligence on the charge of espionage. However, the ministry of intelligence denied the allegation, and after a while 4 of them were charged with “spreading corruption on earth”.

Among those arrested, was Kavous Seyed Emami, who died under suspicious circumstances in prison two weeks after the arrests.
