Iran: Detained British ship must wait for the court verdict
The spokesperson for the foreign ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Abbas Mousavi, addressed the fate of the detained British ship Stena Impero by the Islamic Republic, announcing: “We must wait for the court’s decision regarding their violations.”
According to state-owned IRNA, in his press conference on Monday, Mousavi claimed that there are no correlations between the detained British ship and the Iranian Grace 1 which was just released from Gibraltar. He also claimed that the British ship has committed three violations which the court is reviewing. Stena Impero was detained by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Strait of Hormuz on July 19 in response to the seizure of Grace 1 by British forces in Gibraltar earlier.
The spokesman also stated that attempts to detain the ship again, and even the threat to do so is against freedom of navigation and those who do will “face bad consequences”.
Mousavi also announced that Iran’s diplomatic negotiations for Europe to comply with their commitments to the nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) has failed so far.
He stated that “President Macron is making some efforts” to reduce regional tensions and solve the issues.
Islamic Republic officials have twice reduced their level of compliance with the JCPoA, promising more scale-down if Europe does not comply with its commitments.
Mousavi also announced that Foreign Minister Zarif’s series of diplomatic deliberations have started in Helsinki and he will also visit China, Japan, and Scandinavian countries.
According to Mousavi, the US-led coalition in the Persian Gulf to provide protection for commercial vessels is “dangerous and undermines security”.
