Secret Execution of Two Minors in Iran
Amnesty International announced that two 17-year-old teenagers were secretly executed in Adel Abad prison of Shiraz.
According to Amnesty International, the two who had family ties were executed by hanging last Thursday.
Amnesty has received information that shows the accused, their attorneys, and their families were kept in the dark about the time and date of the executions.
Amnesty International has reported that the two were flogged before getting executed.
Amin Sedaghat and Mehdi Sohrabifar were arrested when they were 15. They were sentenced to death for the charge of “rape” in a trial procedure that Amnesty International has deemed “unjust”.
The two were kept in a correctional facility in Shiraz, but on the day of the execution, they were transferred to Adel Abad prison. Unaware that the executions are scheduled for that same day, they met with their families who were also unaware, and they were executed right after. According to the information, the morgue informed their families the next day.
According to international human rights conventions, all people under the age of 18 are considered “children”.
Iran is a member of the children’s rights convention, but it follows the Sharia Law for criminal justice. Meaning a 15-year-old who is considered to be an adult under Sharia Law will be held responsible the same as a 40-year-old.
According to Amnesty International data, between 1990 and 2018, at least 97 people who were convicted as a minor have been executed in Iran.
