Stolen personal information of 5 million RighTel cellphone users in Iran being sold online

ISNA reported that the personal information of five million RighTel phone operator users in Iran has been stolen and is being sold online.

According to the news agency it seems “the information was stolen by hacking the RighTel database.” The stolen data includes national codes, phone numbers, and postal codes of the users.

There have been several separate instances in the past where information of millions of Iranian users was sold online.

It was announced in March that the personal information of 42 million users of the unofficial version of Telegram app was stolen and sold on the Internet. It was also reported that the information of five million users of Sibap was also stolen. Sibap is a mediator for Iranian users to buy apps from the App Store.

Maher center of the Ministry of Communication confirmed that the personal information of millions of users is being sold online.

There were previous reports about the personal information of bank customers in Iran as well, but the Minister of Communication stated that it was not a hacking but a former contractor using the information for blackmail.
