Britain once again rejects swapping tankers with Iran
Dominic Raab, the foreign minister of Great Britain once again stated that Britain is not willing to swap the Iranian tanker detained in Gibraltar with the British tanker in Strait of Hormuz.
During the summit in Thailand on Thursday, August 1, Raab once again emphasized: "We are not going to barter - if people or nations have detained UK-flagged illegally then the rule of law and rule of international law must be upheld.”
He continued: "We are not going to barter a ship that was detained legally with a ship that was detained illegally. That's not the way that Iran will come in from the cold."
The Islamic Republic has not officially suggested a swap, but Raab’s comments were in response to the suggestion made by the former foreign minister of Iran, Kamal Kharrazi.
Kharrazi said on Sunday that if Britain releases Grace 1, the Islamic Republic will also speed up the “judicial process” of the British tanker.
Grace 1 was seized in Gibraltar by the British forces for violating EU sanctions against Syria. Although Iran claims that the seizure was illegal.
After the UK rejected the idea of tanker swap, Iran’s ambassador to London also said that swapping tankers is impossible.
