Denmark supports British plan for European naval mission in Strait of Hormuz
The foreign minister of Denmark, Jeppe Kofod, says Denmark welcomes the British government’s proposal for a European naval mission in the Strait of Hormuz to ensure the safety of commercial ships.
After Iran seized a British tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, Britain proposed the mission in that area to prevent Iran’s “state piracy”.
Denmark, France, and Italy have initially supported the proposal. The foreign minister of Germany also announced yesterday that Berlin is in negotiation with France and Britain regarding the proposal.
"The Danish government looks positively towards a possible contribution to such initiative," said Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod in his statement. "The initiative will have a strong European footprint".
He continued: “The Royal Danish Navy is strong and capable and would be able to contribute actively and effectively to this type of engagement.”
Denmark is among the biggest seafaring nations in the world.
The United States has announced that it will provide military support for American commercial ships in the Persian Gulf.
