Erdogan: Some of Iran’s positions about our military operation has upset me
Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that he is upset with some of Iran’s positions on Turkey’s military operation in northern Syria.
Iranian officials have opposed Turkey’s military operation in Syria, and they have also warned against Ankara’s decision to establish military bases on Syrian soil.
Before traveling to meet with President Putin on Tuesday, Erdogan said he will also discuss the evacuation of Kurdish forces from northern Syria with his Russian counterpart.
He expressed hope that the cooperation between Ankara and Moscow will lead to cleansing the region from “terrorists.”
The President of Turkey warned that if Kurdish forces do not retreat from northern Syria, Turkey’s military will resume its operation in that region. He also said if Washington does not keep its promises to Turkey the country will resume its operation in a more severe manner.
Erdogan said that according to the report from his defense minister, so far 700 to 800 Kurdish forces have retreated from the “safe zone” in northern Syria and 1200 to 1300 are in the process of retreating.
Germany has presented a plan to create a safe zone in northern Syria to protect civilian refugees, which is Germany’s first plan for a military operation in the Middle East.
Moscow has responded that it will review Germany’s plan of creating a safe zone in northern Syria under the control of international forces.
The five-day ceasefire between Turkey and Kurdish forces in northern Syria will end today. According to the reports, Turkey has rejected President Macron’s request for extending the ceasefire.
