Iran And China React To Pompeo's Remarks About The Return Of UN Sanctions Against Iran

Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman denied US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's remarks that "all UN sanctions" against the Islamic Republic will return following the ‘snapback’ mechanism.

Saeed Khatibzadeh wrote on Twitter on Friday: “13 members, including President of UNSC have declared that America has NO legal standing in the first place to recourse to 2231, as it's not a JCPOA participant. The clock is ticking just in Pompeo's parallel alternate universe! This happens when an ex-spy master leads US diplomacy.”

Pompeo announced on Twitter that "all UN sanctions against Iran" will be restored on September 20, following the activation of the 'snapback' mechanism by the United States.

"If any member of the UN Security Council introduces a resolution to continue sanctions relief, the U.S. will oppose it.” Pompeo wrote. “If no resolution is introduced, the sanctions on Iran will still return on September 20. That’s how UNSCR 2231 works.”

The remarks come as 13 out of the 15 members of the UN Security Council have previously opposed the US resolution.

The current president of the UN Security Council stated that it was "not in a position to take further action" on Washington's request due to a lack of consensus.

In response to Pompeo's remarks, the Chinese delegation to the United Nations also called the US claim to trigger the snapback mechanism "full of lies."

“US is no longer a participant to JCPOA, and therefore ineligible to invoke the snapback” China's representative to the UN tweeted.

However, US Ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Craft said the US will pursue the return of all UN sanctions against Iran by the end of September.

Craft also criticized other members of the Security Council for not supporting the US decision.
