Iran demands immediate return of its sold property in Canada
The spokesperson for the foreign ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Abbas Mousavi says selling Iran-owned buildings in Canada to compensate the “victims of Iran-related terrorism” is “illegal and against international law”.
Previously, Global News Canada had reported that two properties owned by the Islamic Republic of Iran valued at tens of millions of dollars have been sold and the money has been granted to the “victims of terrorist attacks performed by groups backed by Iran” as compensation.
The Ontario supreme court in August ruled that the victims of these attacks will receive a portion of the money from selling these buildings in Ottawa and Toronto.
According to Global News, the buildings have sold for over $28 million and the recipients were all victims of attacks by Hezbollah of Lebanon and Hamas.
The property in Ottawa, known as Iran Cultural Center, was sold at $26.5 million. According to court documents, the property was owned by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The other property in Toronto was sold at $1.85 million.
The recipients were the family of an American citizen who was killed in a Hamas bombing attack and families of two Americans kidnapped by Hezbollah from 1986 to 1991.
The group “Canadian Coalition Against Terror” was behind the reforms that allowed the victims to be compensated. The spokesperson for the group said: “The regime of Iran shamelessly gives tens of billions of dollars to terrorist organizations that destroy the lives of innocent people around the world, including in Canada.”
Canada cut its diplomatic ties with Iran in 2012 due to Iran’s nuclear program, Iran’s support of the Assad regime in Syria, its support of terrorism, and threatening Israel with destruction.
