Iran Human Rights Campaign: Ask Rouhani about the Human Rights Violations
Iran Human Rights Campaign published a statement asking “the international community” to ask Rouhani “directly” about the “terrible violations” of human rights in Iran during his trip to New York.
The statement asks “diplomats and international media” to ask “direct and clear” questions from Rouhani about Human Rights violations and keep the Islamic Republic accountable.
Hassan Rouhani is planning on attending and speaking at the general assembly of the United Nations in New York.
Hadi Ghaemi, the chairman of Iran Human Rights Campaign believes that in recent years, Rouhani has denied responsibility by hiding behind the “independence” of the judiciary excuse. “However, by arresting defense attorneys and activists, Rouhani’s own Ministry of Intelligence is one of the main human rights violators in Iran.”
According to Ghaemi, “even with his limited power, Rouhani can stop some of the violations committed by his own Ministry of Intelligence.”
He continued: “An independent Judiciary doesn’t mean that they are free to arbitrarily arrest any peaceful citizen.”
In recent months, aside from those arrested during the January and July uprisings, a number of environmental activists, defense attorneys, and university students have been incarcerated, along with groups of teachers and workers syndicates.
After five years of Rouhani’s presidency, Ghaemi has realized that “despite his campaign promises, human rights have no place in Rouhani’s agenda.”
