Iranian flights to Baghdad and Najaf on hold until further notice
Due to the recent protests in Iraq and the attack on the Iranian consulate in Karbala, the secretary of the Iranian Airlines Association announced that flights to Najaf and Baghdad are on hold until further notice.
Samani told Mehr News Agency: “Currently many flights to Najaf have been stopped. Some companies who are still flying to Iraq are just bringing back the passengers from Najaf airport.
The ministry of foreign affairs issued a statement asking Iranians not to travel to the holy cities in Iraq until further notice.
On Sunday night, hundreds of Iraqi protesters attacked the Islamic Republic of Iran’s consulate in Karbala. They set fire to a part of the consulate’s wall and intended to occupy the building.
The protesters raised the Iraqi flag over the walls of the consulate and chanted against high-ranking Islamic Republic officials, including Ali Khamenei, the leader of the regime.
Three protesters were killed by the police in this incident.
One protester told Reuters: “Iranians and their subsidiary parties harm us. We will not allow Iranians to remain in Karbala. We will not allow any of their servants to stay in Karbala.”
The foreign ministry of Iraq condemned the attack and announced that Iraqi security have taken necessary measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
During the last month, Iraqi protesters across the country have repeatedly chanted against the Islamic Republic officials and its leader, Ali Khamenei. They want to put an end to Iran’s intervention in Iraq.
