Iranian Refugee Raised $700000 for Pittsburgh Synagogue

An Iranian refugee in the United States has raised over $700000 in donations to help the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

One day after the attack on the synagogue which took the lives of 11 people, Shay Khatiri, 29, started an online campaign in support of the Jewish community. Until Monday night, October 29th, he had raised over $700000.

Khatiri said: “I thought to myself, worst case scenario, we will raise 500 dollars, which is better than nothing and a little more than what we have right now.” He said he was very inspired by the level of support.

He told CNN: “Everyone talks about our differences, but Americans always come together in tragic times.”

Khatiri is a political refugee and currently studies for his M.A in Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University.
