Iranian tanker Grace 1 was released
Iranian tanker Grace 1 was released after almost 40 days of detainment in Gibraltar.
The Gibraltar high court on Thursday ordered to release the tanker after expressing initial concerns about the release.
Prior to the release, the foreign minister of India announced the release of the 24 Indian crew of the tanker
A state-owned newspaper in Gibraltar reported on Thursday that a few hours before the order to release the tanker, the US Department of Justice requested the detainment to be extended.
According to the newspaper, the Gibraltar government has received official assurances from Iran that the tanker will not go toward Syria and will not unload in that country.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Stena Impero, the British tanker that was seized by Iran last month in retaliation, says nothing has changed for the tanker.
Grace 1 was detained in Gibraltar last month with 2 million barrels of oil by the British forces for violating EU sanctions against Syria.
The European sanctions forbid any direct or indirect export of oil to Syria. The government of Britain has announced that the reason for the seizure was the destination and not the origin of the tanker.
Two weeks after the detainment of Grace 1 in Gibraltar, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces seized the British tanker Stena Imperio, claiming it has violated maritime laws. British officials say this was an illegal vengeful act and demand the release of the tanker.
