Iraq protests continue; Dozens killed and hundreds injured in Karbala

Official sources in Iraq have reported that during the last night’s protests in the city of Karbala, security forces shot at the protesters which led to at least 20 killed and 865 injured.

According to Reuters, three injured protesters in the city of Nasiriyah have also died due to the severity of their injuries.

On the fourth day of the second wave of protests, Iraqi citizens took to the streets and chanted against Prime Minister Abdul-Mahdi, government corruption, and neglecting the people. Protesters demanded “real change” and resignation of the government.

The Iraqi army had urged the protesters to leave Baghdad’s Tahrir square by midnight. During the protests, security forces shot teargas at the students who had also joined the protesters.

School and university students in other cities have also joined the protests against the government.

Since the beginning of protests in early October, at least 250 have been killed and thousands injured.

Despite the curfew announced by the government on Monday night, thousands of people in Baghdad came to the streets on Tuesday and chanted against the government.

Muqtada Al-Sadr, the leader of Al-Sadr front which supports the largest wing of the parliament and helped the formation of the coalition government of Abdul-Mahdi, has called for early elections.

Iraqi people believe their politicians are either backed by the US or the Islamic Republic of Iran, and they blame them for the current state of affairs in the country.
