Iraqi protesters attacked the Islamic Republic of Iran’s consulate in Najaf city and set it on fire on Wednesday night. The consulate was under heavy protection of Iraqi security forces, but the protesters clashed with the forces and pushed them back.

Iraqi protesters also entered the consulate premises and took some of the computers and documents with them. Afterward, they removed the Islamic Republic logo from the consulate building and continued their protests while carrying the sign.

Official news agencies of the Islamic Republic of Iran have reported that all the consulate employees and diplomats are safe, and they had left the consulate before the protesters entered the building.

There is currently a curfew in place in Najaf city. The Iraqi protesters have repeatedly objected to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s policies and influence in Iraq and chanted against Iran’s officials including Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic.

Less than a month ago, Iraqi protesters attacked the Islamic Republic of Iran’s consulate in Karbala city. The protesters set fire to a part of the consulate’s wall and flew the Iraqi flag on the building. Iraqi security forces opened fire at the protesters and three were killed.
