Iraqi Shia Militia in War Formation Near American Bases
Mike Pompeo’s unexpected trip to Iraq last week was due to missiles being positioned near American bases in Iraq by Iran-backed Shia militia.
Two Iraqi forces told Reuters that Mike Pompeo received this information from American intelligence institutions.
On the plane ride to Iraq, Pompeo told the reporters that one of the reasons for his unexpected trip to Iraq was due to the security of the American forces in that country.
A senior Iraqi military official who remained anonymous told Reuters: “The message from the Americans was clear. They wanted guarantees that Iraq would stop those groups threatening U.S. interests.”
He continued: “They said if the U.S. were attacked on Iraqi soil, it would take action to defend itself without coordinating with Baghdad.”
Another reliable source told Reuters: “Communications intercepted by the Americans showed some militia groups redeployed to take up suspicious positions, which the Americans considered provocations.”
The Iraqi Shia militia is not under the control of the government and they are led by the international arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Quds (Jerusalem) Force.
It was reported that Iran has moved its short-distance ballistic missiles in the Persian Gulf and there is a possibility of them being used on Iranian boats.
Several Islamic Republic officials have threatened American interests and bases in the middle east, and the leader of the Islamic Republic has called for “war formation” during Ramadhan. However, yesterday he stated that although there will not be any negotiations with the current United States government, there is no possibility of war either.
