Macron Invites Nasrin Sotoudeh to Join the Gender Equality Advisory Council
President Emmanuel Macron has sent an official letter to the incarcerated Human Rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh inviting her to join the G7 gender equality advisory council.
According to Iran Human Rights Campaign, on Wednesday, the attorney for the French embassy has delivered Emmanuel Macron’s official invitation to Reza Khandan, the husband of Nasrin Sotoudeh.
According to Khandan, a draft of this letter has been sent to the foreign ministry and the Bar Association of Tehran.
The letter, which bears the signature of Emmanuel Macron, invited Nasrin Sotudeh to “become a member of G7 gender equality advisory council.”
Last month, Macron invited 35 female human rights activists to join G7 to promote gender equality and improve women’s conditions.
The G7 gender equality advisory council was formed in 2018 with Canada’s presidency. This year, France is the president of the council and Macron has announced gender equality as one of France’s main goals during its presidency of the council.
Two days ago (March 6), Amnesty International called for an international campaign to release Nasrin Sotoudeh from prison. Amnesty asked people to write letters in any language to the new chief of Islamic Republic Judiciary and ask for the release of Nasrin Sotoudeh.
Sotoudeh is serving time in prison on charges such as “propaganda against the regime, insulting the leader, and espionage.”
According to Reza Khandan’s interview with Iran International, based on the indictment, she might face 34 years in prison and 148 lashes.
