Members of European Parliament Demand the Release of Iranian Environmental Activists
26 members of the European Parliament wrote a letter to President Rouhani, demanding the release of the arrested eight environmental activists.
In their letter, they expressed serious concern about the continued incarceration of these activists and “the serious violation of fair trial” for these individuals.
The signatories mentioned that they have raised their concern about the case with Mohammad Javad Zarif, the now resigned foreign minister of Iran.
The MPs also stated: “Respecting international Human Rights standards must be the primary goal of improving the relations between Europe and Iran.”
The letter says that the case procedure for these eight activists is a good test of “Rouhani’s commitment to Human Rights”.
In the past years, many letters have been sent to Rouhani about these arrested activists, but it seems either the government did not want or could not intervene.
The arrested environmental activists have been charged with espionage and spreading corruption on earth. Although the ministry of intelligence has denied their espionage charges, the judiciary has used the IRGC intelligence report as the basis of their case.
They have been denied their own attorneys and their family members have been pressured to testify.
