Mogherini Will Not Attend the Warsaw Summit
According to Wall Street Journal, a high-ranking EU official reported that Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy will not attend next month’s “Peace and security for the Middle East” summit in Warsaw.
The focus of the conference is on Iran’s role in the region, and it is considered to be the new part of United States’ pressure campaign against the Islamic Republic.
Mike Pompeo, the U.S Secretary of State has emphasized that the conference is held as an attempt to negate Iran’s destabilizing efforts in the region.
Despite their concerns regarding Iran’s regional activities, European countries are yet to decide to whether to send their foreign ministers to the summit in Warsaw.
The main three supporters of JCPOA (Iran nuclear deal), France, Britain, and Germany, have not announced their decision on attending the summit, which they view as an alliance against the Islamic Republic.
Poland which faced some criticism from Iran for hosting this conference, says that the international community has the right to discuss any regional or international issue.
The foreign ministers of Israel, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Bahrain, Emirates, and several other countries of the region have been invited to the summit.
Despite U.S pressure, the European Union is trying to speed up the establishment of the Special-Purpose Vehicle for trade with Iran, in order to save the JCPOA. However, disagreements among the members of EU about how to treat Iran has delayed the process.
