The British Iranian charity worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe who has been imprisoned in Iran since 2016, has accused the Islamic Republic of using her and her daughter as political “playthings” and putting her on “auction.”

In her emotional letter from the notorious Evin prison, Nazanin writes: “Last week my country put me on auction for a large amount of money which reflects its political demands.”

“My government claims to support Palestinian, Syrian, and Yemenis' mothers but ignores the tribulation of an Iranian mother separated from her only daughter,” Zaghari continues. “I am the mother of a 5-year-old child who has been deprived by my country of being with her since she was just six months.”

She goes on to say: “My child and I are the playthings of politicians, inside and outside our homeland, who have used us as tools to try to achieve their own political goals.”

She writes that she has given up hope that the Islamic Republic would release her.

Recently, Mohammad Javad Zarif, the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic talked about releasing Nazanin in return for receiving 400 million pounds from Britain. A debt that Britain owed Iran before the Islamic Revolution.

Zarif said that in return for this amount, he was willing to argue for Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s release in court.

The previous Foreign Minister of Britain had called this suggestion “asking for ransom” and had rejected the possibility.

The Islamic Republic does not recognize dual citizenship and in recent years it has incarcerated a number of dual citizens on the charge of espionage or “attempted infiltration.”
